The Basic Order of the Road to Revolution
- 1.) After the French and Indian War in 1763, England established and attempted to maintain strict economic and political control over the colonies in order to remain a world power.
2.) England imposed strict control over the trade.
3.) England taxed the colony after the war in order to pay the troops, to finance the war, and to pay off the cost of the war afterwards. Th British citizens in Britain did not have to pay these taxes. This infuriated the Colonists.
4.) Colonies traded raw materials for manufactured goods with Great Britain. The Colonists had to pay for these goods even though they played a major part in producing them. The colonies were not allowed to produce these goods on their own because England wanted to make sure the colonies were dependent on them for goods.
5.) Colonists had to obey English laws that were enforced by Colonial Governors even though they had no representation in Parliament.
6.) The governors were appointed by the King of the proprietor and the colonists resented their power. They thought of them as "tattletales" because they reported colonists to England if they even slightly broke a British law.
7.) Colonial Legislatures made laws for the colonies that were monitored by colonial governors so that England could remain in strict control over the Colonial Legislatures.
8.) In 1774, the first Continental Congress met to discuss colonial frustrations, problems they had with Great Britain, and to promote freedom.
